Blossom is a sweet three-year-old dog who became pregnant with her own litter of puppies right when she was given up by her owners. She was brought to a shelter in Texas called Westie & Scottie Rescue Houston. The shelter soon learned that Blossom had advanced heartworm disease, which was treatable, but they couldn’t do anything about it until she was finished nursing her puppies, who were still unborn.
Since Blossom needed some extra special care, Maggie Escriva, the intake coordinator at the shelter, offered to foster her until she was ready to be adopted and until after her heartworm treatment was finished. Blossom soon gave birth to a litter of three puppies, lovingly named Bluebell, Begonia, and Buttercup. Unfortunately, within a few days, Bluebell and Begonia passed away because of an infection that had formed in them before they were even born.
Blossom was so heartbroken after losing 2 of her pups. Maggie soon found another litter of 6 puppies who desperately needed a loving mother to nurse them. Maggie knew it would be a health risk for the puppies and for Blossom and Buttercup, but she felt that the situation was so dire that it would be worth the risk.
And it was worth the risk! Maggie said that Blossom looked at the tiny babies, “climbed into the bed and started cleaning and feeding them.” The 6 puppies were all given flower names to honor Blossom. All of them were raised them up to be big and strong, and they all found new homes!
“I find it very inspiring to see a beautiful creature like Blossom suffer such a heartbreaking loss and turn her full attention to caring for needy puppies, saving their lives,” Maggie said. “Blossom is teaching us that the best way to heal is to help others.”
