Just as how God loves us, he also deeply cares about the wellbeing of animals. God created animals so that we have beautiful and exotic companions in every corner of this planet. As animals are also his beloved creations, he wants us to take care of them. We should always be thankful to God for giving us the opportunity to enjoy his creations.
The most beautiful feature of any animal is their ability to speak to one another through melodious sounds. Some of the sounds they create are so harmonious that they soothe our ears. For example, listening to birds talk to one another is so comforting that we can spend hours listening to them even if we can’t understand their conversation.
Animals also have a lot of talent in them because of their incredible abilities. For example, if you have had the opportunity to hear the Superb Lyrebird, you will understand what we mean. The Superb Lyrebird is so talented that it can mimic the sounds different types of a variety of birds. Similarly, the Superb Lyrebird can also imitate man-made sounds such as a camera clicking a picture, chainsaws cutting trees in the forest, and car alarms without breaking a sweat.
Similarly, this story is about a skillful Beluga whale that produced the most unexpected sound. Beluga whales are creatures that love to produce a variety of vocals such as clicks, cackles, squawks, and squeaks. Their vocal skills are so high that they can even mimic a variety of people and animals that live around them.
Discover Magazine, which talks about fascinating developments that take place in the world, had a very interesting article regarding Beluga whales. According to the magazine, a Beluga whale learned how to speak like a dolphin after her relocation to a tank containing only bottlenose dolphins.
Since her time as a captive animal, the four-year-old Beluga whale had spent most of her time with her fellow species. In November 2013, she had to go to a new home. The Beluga whale’s new living quarters were in the Koktebel Dolphinarium, located in Crimea, Ukraine. However, the Beluga whale didn’t have anyone to talk to other than bottlenose dolphins, her new tank mates.
Now you might imagine that she had a difficult time while she was in her new home because she was with different species. Although you might think this is the case, you should know bottlenose dolphins and Beluga whales are from the same family of cetaceans. In other words, both these species are part of the whale family, along with the narwhals and orcas.
On top of that, Beluga whales are also known to be extremely vocal, social, and intelligent. Even though the Beluga whales are social animals, they usually spend all their lives with their species. As they live with only other Beluga whales, their cultural behavior and calls are specific. You can see why the world of science went ballistic after they found out that a Beluga whale learned how to speak in a different tongue after spending time with bottlenose dolphins.
After arriving at her new home, one researcher decided to bring her to a different private tank. The researcher chose to do this because it would be easy to record all the sounds she makes while spending time in her new environment. Initially, as she used to spend time with only other Beluga whales, she used to make sounds that only her species make to communicate with one another. However, as she was with bottlenose dolphins, she was speaking in a language, foreign to them. Even though both species communicate through whistling sounds, they sound different when you pay close attention to them.
After recording her voice for two months, the scientists who were keeping an eye on her noticed something strange and extraordinary. The scientists found that she started adapting to her new tank mates. Rather than making sounds of Beluga whales, she came up with new vowels and whistles that sound like bottlenose dolphins. She could even mimic the signature whistles of different bottlenose dolphins. Beluga whales are popular in this world because of their ability to mimic a variety of sounds produced by animals and people. In fact, they even have the tag “sea canaries” because of singing skills.
The scientists who are studying this beluga whale found her new behavior interesting because it would allow her to get accepted by the group of bottlenose dolphins. The scientists believe that this one stopped speaking in the tongue of Beluga whales because she was no longer with her species.
When the bottlenose dolphins first encountered this Beluga whale in their tank, they were scared of her because of her looks. However, after spending countless hours with her in the tank, they accepted her into their group.
Now, the bottlenose dolphins love her so much that they have no problems when one of their babies swim beside her in the tank.
When you compare bottlenose dolphins and beluga whales, you can see that the latter are much bigger. Although their size is substantial, they are not as big as killer whales. If you want to observe beluga whales in their natural habitat, you will have to go to the Arctic.
When you look at beluga whales, you notice that their heads are protuberant. In their heads, you will find an organ known as a melon which they use for echolocation. The melon produces sounds which are used to look for holes in the ice. Once they find suitable holes, they will come to the surface to take a breath of fresh air. Beluga whales also use the sound to hunt their prey in the cold and dark waters.
Just like us, beluga whales are intelligent and social animals that communicate with each other through sounds. The scientists believe that this beluga whale changed the way she speaks so that she could converse with her new ta
