17-year-old Takes PVC Pipes To Make 150 Dog Beds For Shelter

Seventeen-year-old Chance Call of Utah loves animals. When he was a young boy and first saw those heart-wrenching commercials about helping animals play on TV, he’s wanted to make a difference. Since he knows he cannot adopt them all, he’s found a way to help at least 150 of them in his local area.

An Eagle Scout candidate since 2015, Chance looked for an opportunity to serve his community through one of his Eagle Scout projects.

Originally, Chance wanted to hold a blanket drive to donate blankets to a local animal shelter, but that idea grew into a more ambitious and efficient one. He made beds for the animals instead.

During his research preparing for the project, Chance learned many shelter animals must sleep on cold concrete floors. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, around 6M animals enter shelters every year in America. Many make every effort they can to create comfortable spaces for the animals they take in, but a lack of funds and other resources sometimes make that goal a difficult one to reach.

Chance wanted to change that.

He raised over $3,000 and bought simple PVC pipes, fabric, and screws. Those simple materials became 150 comfortable and safe beds for shelter animals.

Together with his troop, Chance spent 120-man hours constructing the beds. What an incredible cause and what an incredible young man.
